Arlington, TX - History

Arlington, a booming city located approximately halfway between Fort Worth and Dallas, was founded in 1876 as a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railways. Originally a market town supporting local farmers, the area had been attracting farmers for decades due to the fertile grounds, the Trinity River and its tributaries.

Settlers applied for a post office with the name Johnson for the settlement, they were turned down. The post office was eventually established under the name Hayter in 1875; it was renamed Arlington in 1877 after Robert E. Lee’s home in Virginia. The city had five gins for cotton production. Other crops produced were hay, oats, corn, peanuts, potatoes, and sorghum, along with cattle and other livestock. The mineral well in the center of town produced revenue as well. The water yielded medicinal crystals, which were sold along with bottled mineral water to treat illnesses.

By 1890, Arlington had 18 businesses; by 1910 the town had an electric plant, a water system, natural gas lines, telephones and a public school system. After the arrival of the General Motors assembly plant in 1954, industrialization took off on a grand scale.
