Beaumont, TX - History

Beaumont got its start as Tevis Bluff when Noah Tevis first settled the area in 1824. Henry Millard, along with his business partners, came along in 1835 and purchased 50 acres near Tevis Bluff. The combined settlements formed as Beaumont, named after the family of Millard’s deceased wife Mary Beaumont. The town was founded on December 16, 1838.

In its early years, Beaumont was home to cattle raisers and farmers. Located near a river port, the town became a lumbermill and rice-milling town as well. In fact, the Beaumont Rice Mill was the first commercial rice mill in Texas. Beaumont’s lumber industry got its early start with the growth of the railroads after the Civil War.

It was the Spindletop oil gusher in 1901 that put Beaumont on the map. The oil boom doubled the population, brought great wealth and an oil-based economy. The Texas Company (later known as Texaco), Gulf Oil Corporation and Humble (later known as Exxon) were born in the first year of the oil boom.
