Brief History of Brentwood, Tennessee

The original center of Brentwood was developed when John Frost built a cotton gin, gristmill, post office and a general store in this small farming community in the early 1800s.  By the mid-1800s when the railroad came to Brentwood, the town center shifted to what is now Frierson Street.

Brentwood, like the rest of Tennessee, soon found itself in the middle of the increasing tensions between the North and South.  Brentwood was important to both sides due to its rich agricultural production and livestock trade.  Initially, Brentwood citizens rejected separating from the Union, but eventually, Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861.

Wealthy planter, James Hazard Wilson II financed and formed an infantry company in Brentwood.  Two major training camps for the Confederacy were located in Brentwood, as well as many skirmishes throughout the war, primarily due to the abundance of food and supplies.  When the war was over, Brentwood, like other agricultural communities, experienced hardship until the area chose to produce tobacco as its principal crop.
