Columbus, GA - History

Established in 1828, Columbus, Georgia has the distinction of being one of the few cities in the United States to have been planned ahead of its founding. The town was originally set up as a trading post to strengthen the western border of Georgia along the Chattahoochee River. The river connected Columbus with the international cotton markets. By 1860, the city was so industrialized, it earned the nickname of “the Lowell of the South” after the industrialized town in Massachusetts.

By the time of the Civil War, Columbus became one of the most important cities to the Confederacy. The city had textile producers as well as an ironworks and a shipyard for the Confederate Navy. The city did not see actual conflict until April 16, 1865 when General James H. Wilson attacked the city and burned many of the industrial buildings. Today, there stands a marker in Columbus marking “The Last Land Battle in the War Between the States.”
