Dothan, AL - History

Dothan was originally called Poplar Head.  It was named after the poplar trees circling the glade where the "head" or springs welled from the earth.  Originally, the area was a location where ancient Indian trails crossed.  Eventually, pioneers traveling through from the Southeast began settling in the area.  By 1885, the area had grown into a small village. 

On November 10, 1885, the villagers voted to incorporate and renamed the city Dothan, since there was already a Poplar Head in northern Alabama. The city was incorporated the very next day.
