Fort Smith, AR - History

Fort Smith was founded in 1817. It was built as a military post to keep the peace between the Osage Indians and the Cherokees who were emigrating into neighboring territory. John Rogers bought up the government owned lands when the Army abandoned Fort Smith in 1824. He promoted the growth of the civilian town of Fort Smith and he persuaded the government to bring back a strong military presence.

Fort Smith was named after General Thomas Adams Smith, commander of the United States Army Rifle Regiment in 1817. Smith was the one who ordered Army topographical engineer Stephen H. Long to find a site for a fort along the Arkansas River.
