Brief History of Fort Worth, Texas

US Army General William Jenkins Worth proposed building a line of ten forts to mark the line of western Texas from Eagle Pass to the junction of the West Fork and the Clear Fork of the Trinity River.  When Worth died, Major Ripley S. Arnold continued the quest for a site and eventually established camp on the bank of the Trinity River.  The camp was named Camp Worth in honor of the late General Worth.

Eventually, a new line of forts was built further west and on September 17, 1853, the Army abandoned Camp Worth to relocate.  Settlers in the area took possession of the site and began development of the area.  Throughout the 1860s, the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction affected Fort Worth, but the town began to recover in the 1870s.  The first westbound stagecoach arrived in 1874.  The Texas and Pacific Railroad chose Fort Worth to be the eastern terminus for the route to San Diego.

The location of the railroad in Fort Worth created a boom for the Texas Stockyards. The city became the westernmost point for cattle shipment.  The railroad also led to establishment of new slaughtering firms in the stockyards by Armour and Swift.
