Gadsden, AL - History
John Riley built a home near two springs in 1825, creating a settlement named Double Springs.  Sometime after, the area became a stagecoach stop between Huntsville and Rome.  Gabriel and Asenath Hughes purchased Riley's home in 1840.  They began purchasing land in the area and their land along with land belonging to John Moragne and Joseph Rhea to became the initial site of Gadsden. 
When Captain James Lafferty piloted the first steamboat into the area, the town wanted to change its name to "Lafferty's Landing."  Lafferty declined, so the name Gadsden was chosen in honor of Colonel James Gadsden of South Carolina who was famous for the Gadsden Purchase.
