In 1837, Don Palomares received 15,000 acres of land from Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado, which covered land now known as the modern cities of Glendora, Pomona, Claremont, La Verne, and San Dimas. The first families to settle the area came in 1874 and the railroad began building a line from Pasadena to San Bernardino in 1885.
George D. Whitcomb later founded Glendora in 1887. He came up with the name by combining the word glen (due to the mountain glen behind their home) with his wife Leadora’s name. Glendora was incorporated in 1911. In these early years, Glendora became known as the center of the citrus industry. Oranges and lemons were grown and shipped all over the world.
