Houston, TX - History

Houston was founded on August 30, 1836 by brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen near the banks of Buffalo Bayou.  Houston was the capital of the Republic from 1837 to 1840.The city was incorporated in June 1837 and named after the President of the Republic of Texas, General Sam Houston.  General Sam Houston had commanded the Battle of San Jacinto, which took place 25 miles east of where the city of Houston was established. 

In 1870, Congress designated Houston a port city and the first survey of Houston’s proposed shipping channel was conducted.  Two years later, Congress gives Houston its first appropriation of $10,000 for ship channel improvements.  Today, the Port of Houston ranks first in the United States in international waterborne tonnage handled and second in total cargo tonnage handled.
