Huntsville, AL - History
In 1805, John Hunt occupied a cabin alongside a spring in the area, known as Big Spring.  A town sprang up in the area and by 1819, was the largest in the Alabama Territory.  Originally it was called Twickenham in honor of the English village by the same name. During the War of 1812, when anti-British sentiment was running high, the name was changed to Huntsville, in honor of John Hunt.  The town was incorporated in 1811, but the recognized birth year for the city is in 1805, when its namesake arrived.
