Jonesboro, AR - History

The original inhabitants of what is now Jonesboro included the Osages, Caddoes, and Quapaws Native Americans. Trappers, Indian traders, travelers and explorers arrived in the area shortly after 1800, but no permanent white settlement was made prior to 1815. The city was named after State Senator William A. Jones for his support of the formation of Craighead County.

The building was built, but destroyed by fire in 1869. A store across the street was rented and used, but it burned in 1876. A similar building was erected and used as a courthouse until 1878 when it burned.
