Montgomery, AL - History

The original inhabitants of the area now known as Montgomery were the Alibamu tribe. In 1814, two competing businessmen arrived and constructed separate towns, East Alabama and New Philadelphia. The towns merged and were incorporated in 1819 and as one were named Montgomery, after General Richard Montgomery, who died in the Revolutionary War. Montgomery was named the state capital in 1846.
