Pleasanton was on one of the main routes to the gold fields, making it a growing stopover for miners in search of supplies on their way to the Mother Lode. Before that, Spanish soldier Captain Pedro Fages first discovered it in 1772. In fact the Amador-Livermore Valley was settled in 1826 when Jose Amador brought the first settlement to the valley that now bears his name.
The spelling of Pleasanton’s name is the result of a bureaucratic mistake. John W. Kottinger named the town after Civil War general, Alfred Pleasonton. The name was misspelled by a recording clerk and resulted in the modern spelling, Pleasanton.
The arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 brought more settlers to town. Soon after, ranchers and horse breeders discovered the area with its mild climate and abundant water supply. The area soon became home to dairy farms, hops fields, and vineyards. It was during this time a horseracing track was built which still stands today as the nation’s oldest racetrack.
In 1930, several enterprising men realized the great potential of all the sand and gravel below the Amador Valley’s surface, the gravel industry was born and has remained an important and enduring industry for the area.
In 1982, ground was broken on the 850-acre Hacienda Business Park. The land had been considered for a large mobile home park. The groundbreaking on the Business Park marked a change for the future of Pleasanton and brought an influx of large corporations to the area.
Pleasanton has attracted corporate headquarters for large companies such as Safeway, Inc., Shaklee Corporations, and Ross Stores. Other companies with major operations in the area include Hitachi High Technologies America, Inc., Sage Software, CooperVision, Clorox, EMC Corporation, and Symantec.
