San Diego, CA - History

Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer was the first European to visit the San Diego region. However, the city was named in 1602 after Sebastian Vizcaino arrived on his flagship San Diego. He surveyed the harbor and what are now Mission Bay and Point Loma and named the area for the Catholic Saint Didacus, more commonly known as San Diego, the same saint that his flagship was named after.
