Tulsa, OK - History

Native Americans came to Tulsa by way of the Trail of Tears. Forced to leave their home in Alabama, the Lochapkas (Creek) Indians created a settlement named Tallahassee near what is today 18th and Cheyenne in downtown Tulsa in 1836.

For several decades, the area had few settlers and mostly Native American Inhabitants, including the Creeks, Cherokees, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles. In 1846, Louis Perryman who was part Creek, built a log cabin trading post and established the first business in the area. Around this time, the settlement had grown to be a cattle town and trading post and had come to be called Tulsey Town.

In 1789, the Post Office opened, followed by the railroad shortly thereafter. Around the time of the Post Office’s opening, Tulsa was adopted as the city’s name. The city was incorporated in 1898, with a population of 1,100. The Glenn Pool Strike, a giant reserve of oil and natural gas caused the next boom in population. It was during this era, Tulsa became known as the Oil Capital of the World.
