Whittier, CA - History

The land where modern day Whittier is now located was originally settled by a German immigrant who bought 160 acres of public land to homestead for $234. Jacob Gerkens built a small cabin, which is today known as the Jonathan Bailey House. The property changed hands several times after Gerkens settled it before being purchased by a group of Quakers for the purpose of forming a Quaker community. Soon after, “Quaker Brand” fruit was being shipped all over the U.S. and the city became the largest walnut producer in California.

Named after the Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier, Whittier was incorporated in 1898 and boomed in population after World War II.
